In July begins again the whale-watching season in the State of Santa Catarina, in  Southern Brazil. From July to November it’s possible to watch the giant marine mammals, which leave the cold seas of Antarctica, travelling more than 3 thousand kilometers to come to the coast of Santa Catarina to breed and nurse their young. Measuring up to 18 meters and weighing some 40 tons, the whales are docile and seem to be willing to give a show to all visitors. What not many people are aware is that Santa Catarina’s coast is one of the most important reproduction habitats  for these whales.

According to researchers from the “Baleia Franca Project”, sponsored by the Brazilian oil company Petrobrás, more than  200 “Southern Right Whales” (”baleias francas” in Portuguese) were spotted in 2008 in the costal line between Florianópolis (Capital of the State of Santa Catarina) and Cidreira (Rio Grande do Sul State). According to the researchers, the largest concentration of this type of whale was traced in the “Guarda do Embaú” beach in Santa Catarina State. However, “Praia do Rosa” (Rose Beach), located 2 hour’s drive South of Florianópolis, is known to be one of the best places in the world for whale-spotting, even from the beach.

According to GoldenTree InSite Partners, a New York-based real estate private equity investment company, the Brazilian real estate is booming again after fizzling at the end of last year, as sales have rebounded in one of the best emerging markets. Launched two weeks ago, a 104-unit residential project aimed to middle-income families in Vila Carrão, in the outskirts of São Paulo, is a perfect example, pointed out Mr. Thomas Shapiro, president of GoldenTree InSite Partners. “We sold every unit in four hours”, Shapiro said, adding that his company has recently raised an extra $500 million to invest in Brazil. ”Brazilian real estate market indeed took a dip in the fourth quarter but has now gone up “substantially”, added Shaphiro.

Brazil has kept a low profile internationally in the past few months, he added. That was good for GoldenTree InSite to search for good investment opportunities, as local listed real estate companies – such as CYRELLA and GAFISA – were suffering with the stock market debacle.

“Very few funds were raised for Brazil because they forgot the ‘B’ from the BRIC countries,” Shapiro said, adding that the bulk of the available money went to India and China. “It was hard to find something with good fundamentals … that was not outflown with capital,” he said. Shapiro said the fundamentals of the Brazilian economy looked better than expected for the year ahead and a stimulus package from the government has helped the real estate market heat up.

He also experience that the upper class in Brazil traditionally prefers to invest in hard assets in time of crises, believing that Brazilians are not typical stock market investors.

He discarded signs of a real estate bubble forming in Brazil, like the one that hit countries like the U.S. and Spain, according to GoldenTree InSite executive. “Brazil was never leveraged,” he said, adding mortgages represent only 2 percent of gross domestic product. “It could happen in the future, but I don’t see it happening today”, Shapiro said. That’s particularly true for the residential market, he said, in a country with an 8-million housing unit deficit. “Buyers of these units are not speculators,” he said.

Luis Inácio da Silva, President of Brazil, Sérgio Cabral, Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro and Eduardo Paes, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro City, visited together Geneva/Switzerland last June to endorse the support, cooperation and commitment from the Federal, State and City authorities towards the candidacy of Rio de Janeiro to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2016.

According to President Lula, “among the ten largest economies of the world, Brazil is the only country that did not host yet the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has to realize that the possibility of organizing such event would transform the reality of an entire continent. For the USA, Spain and Japan, it’s just another event, but for Brazil, it represents the self-affirmation of a people and a country.” Latin America has never hosted the Olympics.

The decision about where the Games will be played in 2016 will be announced by the IOC on October 2nd.
